Renting a Car for a Lancaster Wedding or Event: What Out-of-Town Guests Need to Know

Lancaster County is one of Pennsylvania's most popular wedding destinations, and for good reason. The region has barn venues, historic manor houses, converted mills, and waterfront properties spread across a countryside that photographs beautifully at any time of year.

If you're a guest traveling from out of state — or even from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh — getting to and from a Lancaster County wedding takes a little planning. This guide covers the practical side: airports, ground transportation, and why a rental car often makes more sense than rideshare for multi-day trips.

Lancaster's Wedding Venues: Why Guests Need Wheels

Unlike a city wedding where guests can walk or rideshare between the hotel and venue, Lancaster County's most popular wedding venues are rural. Many of the barn venues, vineyard properties, and historic estates are located on back roads without rideshare coverage — or with coverage that's slow and unreliable, especially on busy Saturday evenings.

If you're attending a multi-day wedding weekend (rehearsal dinner Friday, ceremony Saturday, farewell brunch Sunday), having your own car makes the entire weekend easier. You're not dependent on shuttle schedules, you can get back to the hotel whenever you need to, and you have the flexibility to explore the county between events.

Which Airport Should You Fly Into?

    Three airports serve Lancaster County:

Harrisburg International (MDT) — Best Option for Most Guests

About 40 minutes west of central Lancaster via Route 283, Harrisburg International handles regional flights from major hubs. The road into Lancaster County is straightforward and the drive is scenic through the lower Susquehanna Valley.

If you're flying from Chicago, Atlanta, New York, DC, Charlotte, or other major cities, check MDT first. The flight options aren't as numerous as Philadelphia, but the convenience advantage is significant — especially when you factor in driving time, airport navigation, and baggage.

Philadelphia International (PHL) — Best for Flight Selection

PHL has by far the most direct international and domestic routes, which makes it the right choice if your city doesn't have good service to Harrisburg or if you're flying internationally.

The drive from PHL to Lancaster is roughly 80–90 minutes on the PA Turnpike (I-76) or via Route 30. It's a reliable drive in normal conditions, but I-76 westbound on a Friday afternoon can be slow. If you're driving from PHL, give yourself extra time.

Reading Regional (RDG) — Worth Checking

About 40 minutes southeast of Lancaster via Route 222. Limited commercial service, but if your carrier flies there, the approach to Lancaster County is smooth and the airport is small enough to move through quickly.

Why a Rental Car Often Beats Rideshare for Multi-Day Wedding Trips

Rideshare apps are convenient for a single trip. For a multi-day wedding weekend in Lancaster County, the math usually tips toward a rental car.

Cost. A Friday-to-Sunday rental at a flat daily rate typically costs less than four or five on-demand rideshare trips in a rural county where surge pricing can apply during late-night demand.

Availability. Rideshare coverage in Lancaster County is thinner than in cities, particularly outside of the city of Lancaster proper. On a Saturday night in a rural area, during or after a wedding, wait times can be long or cars may be unavailable. This is not the moment to discover that.

Flexibility. A rental car means you leave when you want to leave. No waiting at the end of the night. No surge-priced panic at midnight.

Hauling gear. Wedding guests often travel with nicer clothes, dress shoes, gifts, and bags. Having a trunk is useful.

    Getting Around Between Events

Most wedding weekends have multiple events spread across Lancaster County: a welcome dinner at a restaurant in downtown Lancaster Friday, the ceremony at a farm venue Saturday afternoon, a brunch Sunday at a different location.

With your own car, this is a non-issue. Without one, coordinating rideshares for a group across three locations over two days requires more effort than the weekend deserves.

    A few practical notes:

Downtown Lancaster has surface lot and garage parking near Penn Square. Plan for a few dollars per visit — it's inexpensive compared to city rates.

Rural venues typically have on-site parking. Confirm with the couple or the venue before the weekend.

GPS works fine on the major routes. On back roads between rural venues, download an offline map of Lancaster County in advance. Cell coverage is spotty in parts of southern Lancaster County.

    Group Travel Considerations

If you're traveling with a group of out-of-town guests, a few options worth considering:

Multiple rental cars with a designated driver each works well for groups of 4–8. The flexibility to split up if needed is usually worth the cost.

A larger vehicle — an SUV or van — can move a group of 6–8 together if the itinerary is consistent. Confirm capacity and rates at booking.

Carpooling logistics: if several guests are flying into the same airport, coordinating arrival times can make a shared rental car work well and split the cost.

The Reception Night: Getting Back Safely

This section is worth saying plainly: if anyone in your group is drinking at the reception, have a designated driver or a plan before the evening starts.

Rideshare apps work in Lancaster County, though response times late at night in rural areas can be slow. If the venue is particularly remote, ask the couple or venue coordinator whether they arrange shuttle service — many Lancaster County venues do.

If you're renting a car and plan to drink, designate a driver in advance. The back roads between rural Lancaster venues and the hotels on Route 30 are not well-lit and are shared with horse-drawn buggies and farm equipment.

    Booking Your Rental

Red Rose Car Rental operates out of 700 Koser Road in Lititz — about 10 minutes north of downtown Lancaster. If you're flying into Harrisburg, it's about 40 minutes from the terminal. If flying into Philadelphia, plan for about 90 minutes to Lititz.
